Scaleup Programme

The North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and RTC North are recruiting

The North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and RTC North are working together to help deliver a key component of the North East Strategic Economic Plan.

As the delivery organisation for the Scaleup North East Programme, RTC North want to recruit the A team to unlock the potential of the North East’s most progressive businesses.

Scaleup Partners will be the change agents of the region - if you are an energetic person who gets a kick from working with dynamic businesses to unleash their true potential, you should apply for this role. You will be part of a team that will achieve extraordinary things, with countless opportunities to learn new skills and have loads of fun along the way.

We also need a Programme Director, to hold everything together and who has the skills and commitment to manage a £7 million programme. Please get in touch if you think you are that person.

What is it all about?

The North East LEP, together with its partners, is fully committed to ensuring that the North East delivers more for the UK economy and for all who live, learn and do business here.

We know that one of the barriers to creating more economic growth is that we have a widening productivity gap with the rest of the UK.

To narrow this gap, we need a sharp focus. That’s where Scaleup North East comes in – a programme that will create and sustain more scaleup businesses in the North East economy.

How will a focus on scaleup drive productivity growth and the creation of more and better jobs?

The High Growth Small Business Report 2015 highlighted that in the North East LEP area 420 high growth small businesses employing 15,500 people with a combined turnover of £1.8 billion generated approximately 33% of GVA growth during 2014. That’s less than 1% of the business population generating one third of economic growth.

It’s estimated that 25% more scaleup businesses in 2015 would have created 2,786 additional jobs and £130 million in additional GVA.

Recognising the contribution such businesses make, and further economic benefits scaling up could bring, means we have one clear goal:

To create an ecosystem that enables more businesses to scale and to increase the density of scaleup businesses in the North East by 50% by 2024, creating 6,000 additional jobs.

In order to do this, we will prioritise our attention on:

  • Enabling more businesses with scaleup potential to achieve scaleup levels of growth.
  • Supporting existing scaleup businesses to continue scaling, with a particular emphasis on supporting more businesses to scale past £3 million turnover.

Our approach is therefore centred on delivering two strands of activity that target these specific challenges whilst remaining flexible to specific business needs:

Turning scaleup potential into scaleup performance

We are building on best practice approaches (such as the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme) that enable businesses with scaleup potential to achieve scaleup performance.

How will we do this?

Turning scaleup potential into scaleup performance

We are building on best practice approaches (such as the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme) that enable businesses with scaleup potential to achieve scaleup performance. We will assist businesses that achieved a turnover in excess of £500k in the last year and that have the potential to grow turnover and/or profits at a rate of 20% per annum over a three year period. Should a business with a turnover of greater £250k but less than £500K demonstrate significant potential then consideration will be given to their application to join the programme.

Enabling existing scaleups to continue to grow

We are focusing on existing scaleup businesses that require support to continue on a strong growth trajectory. This element will place a particular emphasis on working with businesses with an annual turnover of £1 to £2 million to support them to scale beyond £3 million turnover per annum.

Making it happen

Our lead partner, RTC North Limited (RTC North), has an enviable track record in delivering transformational and innovation services to scaleup businesses. RTC North will deliver the £7 million Scaleup North East Programme on behalf of the North East LEP. The programme will operate from 1 January 2018 until 31 December 2020.

RTC North is in the process of securing the package of revenue and capital based business support to deliver the programme in its entirety. The programme will be funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with and a capital grant element funded via the North East Local Growth Fund (LGF).
